1. What is an SR22, and why do I need one?
An SR22 is a State Required filing or affidavit, when there has been a DUI, a traffic violation or an accident without insurance, that provides proof that you have and will maintain continuous Insurance. It is filed through your insurance company directly to the BMV (BUREAU OF MOTOR VEHICLES), and normally must be maintained continuously for 3 to 5 years.
2. What is an SR50?
An SR50 filing is a State required filing providing proof of CURRENT insurance. An SR50 or SR22 filing is required to get your license back after you have had a suspension.
3. What is a non-owners policy?
A NON-OWNERS policy allows you to take out an insurance policy when you do not own a vehicle. This is common for those needing to reinstate his/her license with either an SR22 or SR50 filing.
4. What happens if I have an SR22 filing and my insurance policy lapses or cancels?
If you have an SR22 filing and your policy lapses or cancels, the BMV will suspend your License again.
5. What happens if I am caught driving without insurance?
Indiana is a mandatory insurance state. Insurance is required by Law. If you are caught driving without insurance, you will lose your license for a minimum 90 days, and will have to pay fines up to $1,000 per occurrence. You will also be required to get an SR50 or SR22 filing to get your license back.
